Alternative methods to tackle Antisocial Behaviour

20/06/2005
Ref: pr 0065

Chelmer Housing Partnership (CHP) enters joint agreement with Basildon Mediation to secure alternative methods to help neighbours in dispute resolve their problems.

"We're tough on ASB and make every effort to resolve the dispute as early as possible," said Andrea O'Callaghan, Quality of Life team manager. "We have lots of tools available to help us do this such as ASBOs or Acceptable Behaviour Contracts but we recognise that not everything is black and white."

"In some cases disputes can be settled if both parties just sit down and talk. With mediation it's hoped that both parties can agree a 'win-win' solution. It's not just about enforcing tenancy rights - mediation teaches people to consider others' views."

Working in partnership with a number of agencies to provide funding for a package of mediation cases allows CHP to look at ASB from a group perspective. All agencies involved can benefit from sharing information and good practice to make constant improvements. "We've seen how well multi-agency arrangements can work through our Safer Estates Agreement*," Andrea continued. "We are confident this joint initiative will be successful and help secure long-standing harmony for neighbours."
